Parece roteiro de filme hollywoodiano, mas é a vida de Stacey Kent. Uma nova-iorquina vai para a Europa de férias, começa a cantar por diversão e transforma-se numa referência dentro do jazz. Um de seus mais constantes e importantes parceiros é um saxofonista com quem ela se casou. Aconteceu isso com a menina que na infância ouviu muito Frank Sinatra e Nat King Cole e, já adulta, foi estudar literatura comparada.
O primeiro álbum, “Close your eyes”, foi lançado em 1997 e fez bonito tanto com a crítica quanto com o público. Depois de ser reconhecida como um talento em seu país natal, ela decolou em carreira internacional e hoje pode orgulhar-se de ter percorrido os mais importantes festivais de jazz ao redor do mundo.
É muito bom para uma estrela quando ela é reconhecida por outras. Com Stacey, uma das passagens das quais deve-se sempre lembrar é a apresentação dela no aniversário de 70 anos de Clint Eastwood. Steven Tyler e Willie Nelson, recentemente, apontaram a moça como uma de suas cantoras favoritas na atualidade. Há quem a compare a Billie Holiday e Ella Fitzgerald. Não é pouca coisa. No que diz respeito aos registros, Stacey começou com “Close your eyes”, em 1997. Os dois mais recentes, de 2007, são “Breakfast on the morning tram” e “The boy next door”.
Kent attended Newark Academy in Livingston, New Jersey.[1] She graduated with a Degree in Comparative Literature from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and moved to England after her graduation. While studying at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she met the tenor saxophonist, Jim Tomlinson, whom she married on August 9, 1991.
In the early 90's, Stacey began her professional career singing regularly in a popular nightspot, Cafe Boheme in London's Soho. Here a generation of young Londoners came to appreciate her unique, sophisticated and timeless approach to the Great American Songbook. After two or three years, Kent began opening for established jazz acts across the road at London's famous Ronnie Scott's nightclub.
Her first CD, Close Your Eyes, was released in 1997. She has released five CDs since then, as of 2006[update], and has also featured on Tomlinson's albums, most recently The Lyric (2005), which won "Album of the Year" at the 2006 BBC Jazz Awards.
Breakfast On The Morning Tram (2007) achieved Gold album status in France in November, 2007 and Gold album status in Germany in February, 2008.
